One word sums up why Stiff Records came into being: frustration. Frustration at the complacency of the UK music industry in the early seventies.

Frustration that so many exhilarating groups and ingenious songwriters were being denied the audiences
they deserved and were left hauling their gear from one pub to another. And frustration at the corporate major labels of the day, where the music itself had become an irrelevance.

Stiff’s creators Dave Robinson and Jake Riviera were music freaks who felt an affinity with music’s “square pegs”. The whole situation made their blood boil. Record buyers were being shortchanged with substandard, unimaginative product, while self-important record company executives dined out on expense account lunches and dished out increasingly ludicrous advances to their stellar acts – some of whom they would never promote. And in an industry that wanted glitter and light entertainment, the prodigious singer-songwriters Robinson and Riviera spent their evenings being blown away by were seen as nothing
